Life Members
The following individuals have been stalwarts for the Old Xaverians Cricket Club over nearly 100 years of its existence. It is fair to say that the club wouldn’t have the history or be in the place it is today without these individuals.
Brian Lugar: Brian joined Old Xavs in 1964/65 from District Club Essendon where he still holds the Club Record for the most number of catches &/or stumpings in an innings. He is remembered for his wicket keeping prowess and in particular being able to stand up to the stumps of the medium pace bowling of Lou Zachariah. He was club captain in 1968/69 and later President. Remembered for his desire to play a Late cut off every ball he faced. Was an active supporter of the club until his untimely death.
Bill Carroll:Bill joined the club in the early fifties and played until the seventies . A right arm off break bowler Bill distinguished himself in his first game opening the bowling and returning figures of 8 for 52 .Bill finished his playing days helping out the MCC A’s ,this occurred because of his association with the MCC XXIX .During his association with the club he served as President ,Captain and was one of the first Life Members and winner of the bowling averages on several occasions .
Gavan Woodruff: Gavan played with the University on leaving school
but was persuaded via the football club to play cricket with the OXCC. “Woody” was a very versatile played as a prolific left handed batsman and a right arm medium pace bowler of great skill .The winner of both the batting and bowling averages on several occasions he also served on the committee as the Treasurer for many years and was the organiser of much social function.
Alan McLean: A captain of the school First XI for 2 years who arrived at Old Xavs in 1954 having been spent 2 seasons at Sth Melbourne in District competition. He was captain of the side in 1954/55 and 1955/56 and best remembered for his enthusiastic if sometimes explosiveness in the field. He remained playing until the early 1970’s. A stylish left handed batsmen, he regularly won the club batting averages / aggregate and the club records show regular scores of 60’s and 70’s. Made a life member in 2005.
Jack Martin: Left school in 1954 and played at University and Collingwood until coming to Old Xavs in the early 1960’s. Went to U.K. and played for various teams including Australia House of which he was captain. Returned to the Old Xavs in the late 1960’s only to return to Sheffield University in 1973 to 1977. He came back to us in 1977. The scene was thus set for a famous Club X1 game. In October 1977 Max Walker returned from the rebel South African tour and opened the attack for Old Caulfield Grammarians at Caulfield Park. Xavs lost the toss and on a greentop Jack opened with Fr. Steve Sinn. When Steve departed for 2, Old Xavs were 1/73 and Jack went on to make 108, smashing Max to mostly the on side boundaries. Jack was a great hooker and puller who made a lot of runs over a long period of playing for Old Xavs. He was also a great clubman and was President from 1983/84 to 1986/87
David O'Shaughnessy: Arguably the OXCC’s best player, David was made a life member in 2001. He captained the club to its first premiership in 1984/85 and was an attacking batsman who regularly tore bowling attacks apart. His greatest contributions to the club were in finals where he played in 3 premierships for the club with Grand Final scores of 105, 75 and 68 – top scores in each grand final. In 1983 / 84 he won the competition aggregate with 427 runs. In his career he scored 4 centuries and was a very useful medium pace bowler. He was a very determined and competitive player and was held in high regard both on and off the field by his team mates and competitors .
Peter Rhoden: On leaving school in the middle 50’s Peter went to Richmond for 4 years and returned to the Old Xavs in 1961. From 1962 to 1968 he spent the winter coaching the OXFC and his summers were spent batting in the middle order, often having to halt a collapse, and then coming into the attack with his legspin bowling. A prodigious turner of the ball, he possessed a vicious wrong-un which collected many a wicket for him. In the early 1970’s he returned to Richmond 3rds for 3 years and captained them to 2 premierships. Having achieved that he returned to the Old Xavs and played until 1979/80. About the only position in the Club that he has not held is President. Great clubman, fierce competitor and known to all. Many a time his determination and will to stay in saved the day and he was then only too eager to get back onto the field and bowl the opposition out. Today, years after his playing days, he is still a strong supporter at games and a mentor to many of the younger players.
Mark Roberts: Mark joined the club in the sixties via the affiliation with the Old Launcestonians Cricket Club .Mark came to the club as a wicket keeper batsman but it was for his keeping that he is remembered and for his enthusiasm for the club .A player with great personality he was responsible for recruiting players to the club in the days when numbers were hard to find and for organising of social events .Although not a collector of trophies he was a great raconteur and organiser of function and is still a great supporter of the club .
Carl Nunan: Inducted as a life member in 2001, Carl's connection and contribution to the club now spans over four decades, as an outstanding player and our longest serving president to date. As a player, Carl first represented the club in the early 1980's and remains the only player to play in four successful premiership sides. As a member of the very strong teams of the 1980/90's period , his playing contribution, with both bat and ball, was outstanding over a long period of time. With career highlights of 9/60 against Old Haileybury in the 1993/94 season, and his famous 127n.o against the MCC C's in the premiership season of 1986/87, Carl is a deserving Life Member on his playing record alone. Combine this with his untiring leadership over a the past twenty years as President, the strong and healthy state of the OXCC can be attributed to Carl's wonderful leadership over that period. A true champion of the Club.
John Zachariah: John was a left arm orthodox spinner who was made a life member in 2001. His playing career started in the late 1960’s and spanned more than 20 years. He achieved many exceptional bowling statistics including 8/28 in 1968 and 9/37 in 1987. He won the competition bowling aggregate in 1987 with 37 wickets. He played in 3 premierships. He was a regular number 11 batsmen and only ever batted up the order if we were short of players. His most famous innings was in the 1986/87 Grand Final where he and Tim Cosgrave put on a 10th wicket partnership of 19 to win the game – legend has it that it was John’s first innings of the year. In retirement John has put together the history section of the club which has been greatly admired and appreciated.
Lou Zachariah: Lou first started playing with the Old Xavs in the late 1940’s and kept playing until 1974 whereupon he was awarded life membership. He was an attacking opening bowler who could move the ball both ways and took numerous wickets. Regarded as the life blood of the club for many years, he was also responsible with Don Sanders in setting up the Annual Match v Old Launcestonians. Records show him to be a regular winner of the club bowling aggregate and in 1969 took 31 wickets; other key performances which emphasize his longevity – 7/45 in 1954/55 and 7/41 in 1971/72. Was not considered the most capable of batsmen.
Peter Stanley: Peter was probably the first Xavier boy to be selected for the First X1 in Year 9 and play in shorts. It would not surprise if his number of stumpings and catches still stands as an APS Record. On leaving school in 1961 he kept for University 2nds in 1962 and 1963. In 1964 he returned to the Old Xavs and began a career that lasted until the 1980’s. Over the journey he developed into a competent batsman and in fact in later years opened with great aplomb. A very strong onside player who disciplined himself to be constructive on the offside. His wicket keeping was marvellous, standing up to medium pace seamers and swingers alike, searching for a stumping. The fast bowlers could attack with the assurance that a nick would be gloved without fanfare. Anticipation and footwork was preferred to diving and thus very few chances went begging. As Secretary and treasurer from 1977/78 to 1981/82 he was responsible for holding the Club together in difficult times.
Edward Borghesi: Inducted as a life member in 2010, Ed's connection with the club spans over four decades, and was an outstanding player and past Captain of the club in the 1980/90's period. A three time premiership player, Ed was an outstanding allrounder for many years, as both wicketkeeper and versatile batsmen over his playing career. Tough as nails, Ed could always be relied upon to rise to the challenge, and was never backward in coming forward, in his role as wicketkeeper, to let opposition players know what we thought of their playing capabilities. A century maker, some outstanding high scores and seasonal batting averages over the journey, and a high class wicketkeeper, Ed was a central figure in putting together the strong and successful playing group of his era.
Tim Cosgrave: Tim was made a life member in 2011. His playing career started in the late 1970’s and included playing in 3 premierships including the 1986/87 flag where he was captain. A talented all rounder and a very astute tactician, Tim was very helpful to other OXCC captains in the strategic side of things –this knowledge is now being passed on to his son Matthew. Tim’s most famous game would be the 1986/87 Grand Final where he scored 29 not out with partnerships of 22 for the 9th wicket and 19 for the 10th wicket which claimed victory. A past President, Tim was responsible for the club moving back to the school to play home games – a lasting legacy for which the current players are very grateful.
Richard Borghesi: Richard first played with the club in the mid 1980’s following in the footsteps of his father and 2 older brothers. Richard was initially a wicket keeper but over time developed into a reliable opening batsman who proved very difficult in being dismissed. At times he would be called on to bowl his medium pacers. Richard played in 3 premierships and was captain in 1996/97 after Terry Peters had to relinquish the role mid season. In the 1996/97 Grand Final Richard top scored with a dour 31 which was largely responsible for the victory. In 1993/94 he made 228 runs for the season and regularly laid a solid foundation for the team. In more recent years Richard has been Club Treasurer and was made a Life Member in 2013.
Bernard Heaphy: Bernard first played in 1985 and played till late 1990’s. He was an opening bowler and middle order bat. Bernard played in 3 premierships and was captain in 1989/90. His bowling performances in Finals were outstanding – 1986/87 Grand Final took 5/23 off 19 overs and was responsible for a crucial opposition run out after throwing the stumps down. 6/21 in Semi final 1989/90 and 3/8 in Grand Final. Regulalry made scores of 30s and 40s. Took 24 wickets in 1990/91. Remains a great supporter and made a Life Member 2014.
Joe Forrest: Joe first played in 1986 and was a prolific right handed batsman. Joe played in 3 premierships – career highlights being 112 v MCC in 1997/98; 262 aggregate runs in 1993/94 and 296 aggregate runs in 1996/97. Joe stopped playing briefly in late 1990’s however returned to play 2nd XI in 2000’s. Joe was a very occasional bowler and has fond memories of his wicket off the last ball of the game v OM’s in 1996/97. Joe is a regular club supporter and enjoys watches his 2 oldest boys James and Matthew follow in his footsteps. Joe was made a Life Member in 2014.
