1’s Outclassed By OM’s
The 1’s boys were off to Todd Road for an exciting match between 3rd and 4th gearing up for the finals. Old Melbourne are always a quality side that serves as benchmark for a strong flag contending team. The pitch was prepared in pristine condition on quite a small ground, we knew there would be plenty of runs out there. Captain Angus Sheedy won the toss and elected to bowl first to get on the front foot.
Bailey Wheelan, our trusty opener, started with a fantastic over. He has truly found his rhythm and is one of the highest calibre bowlers in the league. Whilst he didn’t take a wicket he provided a much-needed maiden and tight figures, which would prove difficult for the rest of the team to match. After a difficult first over, Pat Nunan showed his typical resolve and was able to tidy up his spell, putting some much-needed pressure back onto the batsmen. We then resorted to spin to take some pace off the ball, Lucas Agnoletto took a brilliant catch off Nic Russ’ bowling that could make the highlight reel. Unfortunately, OMs middle order showed us what we need to improve on. They were able to constantly tick over the runs through single after single, even if boundaries came not so easily.
After a quick break and a chat from the captain we went into bat. Our day deteriorated rapidly with our top order quickly knocked over. Kane Pirera showed some intense bravery after being struck right where you don’t want to be struck. Nic Russ showed his typical class ticking over the runs whilst showing some elegant shots, he has been one of the great pickups for the club. Jim Forrest showed some resolve hitting a handy 25 but was knocked over with a brilliant yorker. We then collapsed under some good bowling and run rate pressure. It was extremely disappointing to get bonus pointed but it was a necessary wake up call before the finals campaign is to begin.
