Dominant 1s just miss out on bonus point vs Old Trinity

The 1st XI arrived at the ovals of Trinity, keen to do battle with another top four contender. Jimmy Forrest lost the toss and Trinity elected to bat first.

Bailey Whelan (3/19 off 8) opened the bowling with a superb spell, whilst Cal Todaro (0/25 off 7) was promoted to join him after weeks of consistent line and length quality. Bailey broke through with a pair of early wickets, whilst Todaro continued his very valuable season with plenty of dots. Mark Dowling (1/15 off 5.1) bowled well without much reward, he continuously beat the batsmen but was unable to secure a wicket in his first spell. Matt Forrest (2/19 off 4) bowled some good line and length however the good balls were dots whilst the bad balls were either boundaries or wickets. Forrest spell was entertaining to say the least, as he manage to provide both the fielders and batsmen alike with some laughs as he couldn’t control the ball. Pirera (0/12 off 1) had some struggles with the ball as well, however Charlie Johnson (2/35 off 7) bowled a great spell and earned a couple wickets himself. Angus Sheedy (0/13 off 4) bowled well, whilst Ollie Sestan (1/8 off 3) had his second spell for the Old Xavs and was rewarded with a wicket. Whelan and Todaro returned to finish off the innings, and had all Trinity all out for 148.

After the lunch break, Pirera (12) and Sheedy (58)walked out to the middle. Pirera began proceedings in a typical fashion, finding the boundary with these. Unfortunately a mistimed shot saw the end of Pirera, which led to Jimmy Forrest (56) joining his co-captain at the crease. Forrest and Sheedy Made short work of Trinity’s total, demoralising their bowls with the big shots and smart placement. Shortly after making his 50, Forrest was out which saw a mini collapse as the Old Xavs tried to chase down a bonus point. Woodhouse and Sestan both fell cheaply, however Hicks (6*) insured the Old Xavs won, albeit in the 21st over which meant the bonus point wasn’t achieved.

A productive win in an important matchup for the Old Xavs with a bye on the horizon. Thanks to all who played an important role in the win, hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the xavs.
