Magoos have strong round 2 Win vs Caulfield 6/11
The Sunday after Stakes Day is commonly the hardest in the year to fill a cricket side as it coincides with a lot of drinking on the Saturday as well as a lot of exams in the upcoming week. Luckily for the OXCC 2nd XI, the 1st XI were washed out, so a strong outfit was able to be picked for the trip to Glen Huntly Park.
Winning what would have to be their millionth toss in a row, the OXCC batted first on a very green but very hard wicket. Andrew Seal (23) and Angus Sheedy (21) put on a solid start for the magoos, which was progressed further by Nick Harries (28) and skipper Matt Perrett (53), who’s run a ball half century was brough up by a 6, then ended with a full toss being dollied to short cover. At the fall of Pez the Xavs were 5/145 with 11 overs to go, and the hope was to reach 200 at least knowing how firm the wicket was. This goal was reached through some excellent running between wickets of Bobby Knott (41) and twitter verified returning son Matt Forrest (18). Ending on 9/213 left the Magoos with a lot of confidence, knowing they only needed 9 wickets due to the suspected ruptured ACL of Caulfield’s captain.
The efforts in the field were nothing but clinical from OXCC. Bailey Whelan (2/19 off 8) showed his class and was simply too good to get away, and Edward “The Chief” MacIsaac (0/14 off 5) beat the edge more times that I could count. Single wickets to Forrest, Perrett and Sheedy as well as an excellent run out front Knotty saw Caulfield fall 45 runs short of the required total at 6/168 after the 40 overs, despite a crafty 44* by their number 8 which was the classic too-little too-late type of operation.
A great first W for the Old Xavs as they look to build momentum despite struggling for numbers.
