Season ‘24/25. Club Update
The summer of cricket is here.
Season 2024/25 has begun in typical OXCC fashion: A few brilliant wins, and few poor losses, plenty of fill-ins but plenty of good times.
The OXCC are fielding 3 teams again this season, with the Senior Men’s 1st and 2nd XI as well as the Veterans XI returning for their second season.
Thanks to the excellent work of Rob MacIsaac (OX1983), the OXCC is now an incorporated club with an official committee, which has set the club up for success and prosperity for the years to come.
Last season recap:
Recapping last season, the 1st XI narrowly missed finals in a very strong competition, finishing 5th with the stand out performer being opening bowler Bailey Whelan (OX2019), making team of the season and winning the league bowling award after taking an incredible 27 wickets @ 10.41.
Meanwhile, the 2nd XI brought home the clubs first premiership in 6 years, and the clubs first ever 2nd XI flag. Skipper Matt Perrett (OX2017) led the way making team of the season making 260 runs and taking 8 wickets, but it was stalwart Pat Nunan (OX2015) who took a combined 8/31 across the finals series (including a best on ground 5/13 off 8 in the grand final) to steer the lads to premiership glory.
The Vets faced some difficult opponents in their first season, but the foundations have been laid and a change of divisions this year is likely to see more wins on the board in 2024/25. Bernard Heaphy (OX1981) taking 8 wickets @ 12.75 was one of the key performers.
Season 2024/25:
The current season is still in it’s early infancy, however we have already seen some exceptional performances from members of each OXCC team.
Captain Kane Pirera (OX2018) has the 1st XI 2-1 after 3 games, with Bailey Whelan (OX2019) continuing his previous season’s form taking 5 wickets in round 1.
The 2nd XI, looking to go back-to-back, are currently sitting in 2nd spot thanks to league leader Eddie Paul (OX2022) sitting on 10 wickets @ 9.4, and Andrew Seal (OX2017) averaging 41 with the bat after 4 games.
The Veterans, under David MacIsaac’s (OX1982) leadership, have had a win, loss and tie from their 3 games. Michael Meehan (Father of James OX2019) is averaging a Bradman-esque 103 to start the year with several other batsmen also contributing scores of 40* (the retire score for the Vet’s competition).
All in all, the club is tracking nicely in the early part of the season, but there is a constant struggle in the Seniors to fill sides each week, still relying too much on fill-ins.
We invite encourage anyone who is keen on cricket to join us on Wednesday nights at Xavier for training at 6:30pm - come and have a crack. And you can keep up to date with our latest posts and scores via Instagram (@oldxavscricketclub).
